Honest Signal
An honest signal is one that is not cheap to fake: its cost is the proof. In biology the peacock’s tail is the standard example — it costs so much that only a healthy animal can afford it. Human institutions have always worked with the same logic: a handwritten letter, a carefully worded job application, a thoroughly prepared proposal counted as evidence of seriousness because they cost time. It is exactly this coupling that generative AI dissolves. The effort of phrasing has fallen to almost zero, and with it every procedure loses its basis that read diligence from the appearance of what was submitted. What remains are signals tied to something scarce: verifiable references, demonstrable affiliations, a name that stands behind it.

An honest signal is one whose forgery would cost more than its benefit. A handwritten letter was that for a long time: it cost time, and the time was the proof. So was a carefully worded job application. Neither is any longer, now that phrasing costs almost nothing. What remains are signals tied to something scarce: a verifiable reference, a demonstrable affiliation, a result that someone answers for by name.
A closer look
This refers to signals from actual behavior rather than from statements: usage, drop-offs, repeat visits, willingness to pay. They are harder to embellish than surveys and are available daily rather than quarterly.
Why it matters
This is the quiet shift that affects many processes without anyone having decided it: hiring procedures, peer review, bid comparisons, customer reviews — everywhere, effort was previously read as evidence of seriousness. Whoever is responsible for such procedures should check which signal they are actually measuring and whether it still holds. The answer usually leads to more conversation and less document, or to evidence that lies outside the submitted material.
Commonly misunderstood
Behavior is honest, but not self-explanatory. A drop-off can mean disinterest or a broken page. Without follow-up, the interpretation stays open.
